Cynthia Rebolledo, a contributing writer to Culture OC, earned a 1st place win in Culture News, Profiles (Online) at the 67th annual Southern California Journalism Awards on June 22 for her story, "Artist Alicia Rojas Honors Las Poderosas of Latino Health Access." The event was hosted by the Los Angeles Press Club.
She profiles Santa Ana artist Alicia Rojas’s public art project, "Las Poderosas de Latino Health Access," which amplifies the stories and sacrifices of Latino Health Access promotoras – the frontline community health workers in Santa Ana during COVID-19 – through oral histories, portraits, a sculpture and a publication honoring them as unsung heroes.
The judges' said: "The writing evokes the scary early days of the pandemic, highlighting an art and oral history project that honors unsung heroes of that time."
