In celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month, the Art Gallery at Golden West College is pleased to present Rasquachismo: Lowriders Can and Do Resist, a multi-media exhibition celebrating the aesthetics and transformative power of Lowriders cars.

“This exhibition revisits the history of Southern California and highlights the role of lowriders as a ‘cultural vehicle’ for Chicanx communities,” says Curator and Gallery Director Laura Black.

The exhibition features work by contemporary artists Justin Favela, Stephanie Mercado, Aaron Moctezuma, José Manuel Flores Nava, Alicia Villegas-Rolon, and Cora J. Quiroz. An eponymous, full-color catalog featuring essays by Laura Black, Kiandra Jimenez, Alexis Monroy, Sarah Salcido, and Pilar Von Hummel will be published on the occasion of the exhibition.

An opening reception for Rasquachismo, will take place on Friday, Sept. 15 from 5-8 p.m. Members of the media are invited to attend a Media Preview of the exhibit one hour before the opening reception, at 4 p.m.

The exhibit will run through November 5, with a closing reception on Friday, Nov. 3 from 3-5 p.m. that will include a book signing.

Gallery hours are Monday-Friday, 12-4 p.m. or by appointment. For more information, please contact Black at lblack1@gwc.cccd.edu or call (714) 206-9373. You can also find more info about gallery exhibits on Instagram @gwc.gallery.
