See Neil Simon’s comic fable of wit, wonder and triumph of the human spirit.

Westminster Community Playhouse (WCP) is bringing a whimsical touch of romance and comedy to its stage with Neil Simon’s “Fools.” The lesser-known gem by the legendary “king of comedy” follows Leon Tolchinsky, an idealistic young schoolteacher who arrives in a remote Ukrainian village only to discover that its townspeople are cursed with chronic foolishness.
His task seems simple: educate Sophia, the enchanting young woman he quickly falls in love with, and break the spell that has lasted 200 years. But as Leon soon learns, lifting the curse is far more complicated than he ever imagined – especially when love and laughter collide.
At the helm is Matt Riggle, a seasoned director whose career spans Six Flags live entertainment productions, Pirates Dinner Adventure in Buena Park and national tours in both improv and stand-up comedy. Riggle’s passion for Neil Simon drew him to this project.
“I’m a big Neil Simon fan but was unfamiliar with this particular play. Once I read it, I knew I wanted to tell this story. It’s a feel-good comedy, filled with physical humor and unexpected discoveries. Comedy, to me, is like digging for buried treasure – you find the real gems through exploration with the cast.”
In his first directorial outing at WCP, Riggle describes his experience as deeply rewarding. “The board and producers have been nothing short of amazing. I’ve felt incredibly supported every step of the way.”

The production boasts a dynamic ensemble. Landon Moss stars as Leon Tolchinsky, the straight man at the heart of the comedy. It’s a challenging role requiring both realism and impeccable timing. Michele Sams plays Sophia, bringing not only beauty and charm but also sharp comedic instincts to the stage. Greg Stokes and Desi Molinari portray Sophia’s eccentric parents with lively chemistry, while Neil Switzer delights as the story’s villain, delivering lines with a comic flair that makes even his antagonism endearing.
The town’s colorful citizens are brought to life by Katie Moore as Yencha the vendor, Isiaah Moore as Slovitch the butcher, Gaelyn Wilkie as Mishkin the postman, JD Rinde as the Magistrate, and Michael Corcoran as Snetsky the shepherd, who also built the show’s set. Riggle praises the ensemble’s versatility, noting that the casting process brought together not only talent but also professionalism and creativity.
The production’s visual world has been crafted by WCP board member Michael Corcoran, who not only appears onstage as Snetsky but also designed and built the set, giving the village a sturdy yet whimsical character complete with a balcony that plays a key role in Leon’s antics. Sound and lighting teams enhance the fable-like atmosphere, supporting both the comedy and the romance with subtle effects that bring Neil Simon’s enchanted village to life.

“As a builder, I sometimes focus too much on the function of the set, but in this case, watching Leon climb up and down the balcony has been a joy. “Fools” is unlike most Simon plays because it breaks the fourth wall, has a fable-like quality and yet is packed with humor.”
Corcoran shares a favorite anecdote about the play’s origins, “Simon actually wrote ‘Fools’ during his divorce from Marsha Mason. Part of the settlement was that she would receive profits from his next play. So he set out to write a flop – but ironically, it became a success.”
Founded in 1974 as Westminster Players, WCP is now celebrating its 66th season. The nonprofit theater produces four plays, one musical and a children’s program each year. With a mission rooted in education, community and creativity, WCP continues to be a cultural cornerstone in Orange County. Street and accessible parking are available for all patrons.
Neil Simon’s “Fools” promises laughter, heart and a touch of magic as the curse of a village meets the power of love. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to experience one of Simon’s most unique works brought to life by a stellar cast and creative team.
