He served as The Orange County Register’s classical music critic from 1998-2016, and has also written for Opera News, the Los Angeles Times, the Baltimore Sun, the Los Angeles Herald Examiner, Musical America and Gramophone, among other publications. Stories written by Mangan have been chosen to be included in the archives at the Library of Congress.
